Scottie Scheffler showed determination and skill at the U.S. Open on Friday. After a challenging start with a 2-over at Shinnecock Hills, he maintained composure to finish with a 2-under 68. This performance placed him at even par for the tournament, tied for 11th, and seven strokes behind leader Wyndham Clark. With two rounds remaining, Scheffler is eyeing a potential victory on his 30th birthday, which would make him the seventh player to achieve a career Grand Slam.
Breaking a streak of ten U.S. Open rounds without breaking par, Scheffler demonstrated a marked improvement compared to his 4 over performance last year at Oakmont. He seemed more relaxed, perhaps thanks to a conversation with coach Randy Smith prior to Friday’s round. Starting with the birdie at the 10th hole in split-tee format, Scheffler managed three birdies and one bogey during the round.
Reflecting on his approach, Scheffler commented, “Doesn’t really matter to me. I just play.” His performance included hitting 12 of 14 fairways and reaching 15 greens in regulation. In contrast, Thursday saw him hit the same number of fairways but only nine greens.
Despite near misses on some birdie putts, Scheffler remained optimistic. He expressed a desire for more birdies but acknowledged the high quality of many shots and putts. A bogey on No. 13 resulted from a bunkered approach and a missed par putt, yet he managed a par-saving recovery from the sand on the par-3 17th, avoiding further trouble.
“Yesterday was a day you could shoot yourself out of the tournament. The conditions were tough, but I hung in,” said Scheffler. He battled through a difficult front nine, recovered well, and hopes to continue the solid performance over the weekend.
Throughout the round, Scheffler and his playing partners — J.J. Spaun and Mason Howell — faced delays as groups ahead took their shots. Amidst the waiting, Scheffler maintained focus, even enjoying half a peanut butter and jelly sandwich at the tee box, unfazed by fans’ questions.
