Shia LaBeouf Sentenced to Probation After Mardi Gras Incident

1 day ago 0

Actor Shia LaBeouf pleaded guilty to charges of simple battery and received probation following an altercation at a New Orleans bar during Mardi Gras. LaBeouf, aged 36, was seen in a video from February 17 shoving and hitting individuals outside the bar, leading to a possible nose dislocation in one person according to police reports. Orleans Parish Judge Juana Marine-Lombard sentenced LaBeouf to six months suspended and two years of probation. He is required to complete an alcohol treatment program.

The incident occurred near New Orleans’ French Quarter and involved the use of homophobic language, both during and post-arrest. LaBeouf’s lawyer, Sarah Chervinsky, stated that the actor wished to take responsibility for his actions and described the event as a “minor Mardi Gras bar tussle.” She emphasized that there was no evidence suggesting bias or prejudice in the altercation. The victim of the incident, known locally as entertainer Jeffrey Klein, expressed hope for LaBeouf’s improvement after treatment.

LaBeouf has had several legal issues throughout his career. This includes a 2017 incident in New York for assault and another in Georgia for public drunkenness and obstruction. In 2020, he faced charges of misdemeanor battery and petty theft in Los Angeles following a lawsuit by singer and actress FKA Twigs regarding alleged abuse during their relationship. The case was resolved in July of that year.

Despite this, LaBeouf doubts that rehab for drinking will address his behavioral problems. He attributes these to ‘anger and ego’. When interviewed by YouTuber Andrew Callaghan, LaBeouf expressed fear of larger men near him, asserting his reaction was a personal issue rather than homophobia.

LaBeouf, who first gained fame on Disney’s ‘Even Stevens’, has renewed his Catholic faith amid his legal struggles. Local attorney Michael Kennedy affirmed the necessity of fair treatment irrespective of celebrity status. The case highlights New Orleans’ stance on equality and safety for all residents and visitors.
