South London Woman Sentenced for Manslaughter After 50-Year-Old Case Reopened

6 hours ago 0

Janice Nix has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of manslaughter. The case revealed that decades ago, she forced her stepdaughter into a hot bath as a form of punishment. The incident, occurring in 1978, involved Andrea Bernard, who was only five years old at the time of her death.

Nix, now 67, was a former drug kingpin in South London before becoming a probation officer. Her conviction relied heavily on the testimony of Andrea’s brother, Desmond Bernard, who was eight when his sister died. Desmond kept the truth hidden for nearly 50 years. “The last memory I have of my sister’s life are her piercing screams,” recalled Desmond, now 56, during the sentencing hearing.

For almost half a century, Andrea’s death was treated as an unfortunate accident. At the time, a coroner’s report concluded she had died from sepsis caused by extensive burns. However, recent legal proceedings brought to light a darker truth. Prosecutors claimed that Nix had forced Andrea into the scalding water as a punishment. They described this act as part of an abusive pattern where Nix also beat the children with belts, burned them with cigarettes, and even bit them.

Desmond provided further insight into the tragic day in June 1978. Andrea had been ordered by Nix to skip school and help clean their house in Thornton Heath. She feared the harsh punishment she might receive for disobeying and attempted to flee the situation, prosecutors stated.
