Investigators examined the wreckage on Wednesday to determine why a business jet crashed on a Texas highway, resulting in one fatality among those on board. The pilots had reported mechanical issues while requesting an emergency landing at a nearby airport.
The crash, which occurred late Tuesday in Laredo near the Mexican border, prompted nearby drivers to rush from their vehicles. They attempted to assist police in rescuing passengers and crew from the burning aircraft. Video footage captured the chaos as bystanders used sledgehammers and makeshift tools to try and open the plane’s door. One firefighter managed to enter the smoke-filled jet and extract a person trapped inside while others had escaped.
Laredo Mayor Victor Treviño remarked, “While the loss of life is deeply regrettable, it is nothing short of a miracle that this tragedy did not become a mass fatality event.”
The cause of the crash remains unknown. Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. The investigation team, led by Laredo Police Chief Miguel Rodriguez Jr., worked at the crash site on Wednesday.
Authorities did not disclose the victim’s identity due to a family request. Onboard were two pilots and three teenagers. The Cessna Citation Latitude twin jet, operated by NetJets, had departed from San José del Cabo, Mexico, heading for Austin, Texas.
The jet crashed on Loop 20 highway around 10 p.m., shortly after pilots contacted air traffic control to report low fuel and a power outage. Laredo International Airport Director Gilberto Sanchez stated, “They had mechanical issues and they lost communication with the tower, and that’s when the accident happened.”
Video footage shared on social media showed the aircraft hitting a light post and stopping near the airport after striking a car. One motorist was hospitalized and is in stable condition. The plane lay on its side, severely damaged, near a highway barrier.
Zayra Garza, who witnessed the scene, described her shock as the plane appeared like something out of a movie. She recorded the scene while her husband tried to help. Teenagers, followed by a pilot, emerged from the open plane door. Another crew member attempted to rescue an unconscious individual. Smoke poured from the plane as a firefighter entered to save the remaining passenger. Police officers assisting had to evacuate due to smoke inhalation, with five treated at a hospital.
Garza expressed concern about the potential for an explosion. “What was worrying me was the fire,” she said. “I was concerned that it could have just exploded at any time.”
This incident marked the third aviation accident in recent days. A B-52 crashed during a test flight in California, killing eight, and a skydiving plane crash in Missouri resulted in 12 fatalities.
