Texas Republican Senate Primary Features Trump’s Influence

1 week ago 0

Texans are actively selecting a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in an ongoing runoff election. This marks the conclusion of a prolonged, intense, and costly primary. President Donald Trump recently intervened to sway the race, aiming to remove GOP figures he regards as lacking allegiance to him.

Trump endorsed state Attorney General Ken Paxton over the incumbent, four-term Sen. John Cornyn. This endorsement provided Paxton with an additional boost, raising the possibility that Cornyn might be the first Republican senator in Texas history to seek re-election and lose. Despite significant spending, approximately $90 million since the previous year by Cornyn’s campaign and supporters to oppose Paxton, Trump’s support could alter the race dynamics.

This development is part of a broader pattern where Trump targets Republicans he perceives as disloyal. His influence was previously evident in states like Louisiana, Kentucky, and Indiana, where he supported challengers to incumbents. Paxton’s team rapidly launched advertisements promoting the endorsement shortly after Trump’s announcement.

Paxton will face Democratic state Representative James Talarico in the November election. Additionally, Democratic runoffs in districts around Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio are also underway, affecting various U.S. House nominations.

Impact of Trump’s Endorsement

Following Trump’s announcement, Cornyn admitted that the endorsement would have an impact on the race. However, he remained determined, stating that ultimately, Texan voters would make their choice.

The election campaign has been marked by a negative tone, exacerbated by significant spending from both sides. Cornyn initially led in the March primary but did not secure a majority due to a third candidate, U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt’s participation.

Pro-Cornyn groups have continued to question Paxton’s ethics and personal conduct, citing past controversies. These include his acquittal in a 2023 impeachment trial and personal matters like his wife filing for divorce. Despite these attacks, Trump’s endorsement cited Paxton as a resilient figure.

2024 Election Landscape

In criticizing Cornyn, Trump highlighted perceived disloyalties and hesitations in supporting his administration. Cornyn, however, stated that these criticisms were misguided and reiterated his alignment with Trump’s policies.

The Senate GOP leadership expressed support for Cornyn, suggesting he could be more advantageous in the general election. Strategists noted that a Paxton win could require increased campaign spending, diverting resources from other strategic locations where Republicans seek to maintain control.

Focus on Democratic Nominees

Meanwhile, Democrats are determining nominees for several key U.S. House seats in Texas. In the Houston area, there is contention between Rep. Christian Menefee and Rep. Al Green for the 18th District. Legislative changes had previously led to significant electoral shifts in the region.

In the Dallas-area 33rd District, former Rep. Colin Allred is contending against U.S. Rep. Julie Johnson, following Allred’s reconsideration of his Senate ambitions.

Around San Antonio, party leaders are working to prevent Maureen Galindo, who has made previous antisemitic statements, from winning, so as not to hinder Democratic objectives in the 35th District.
