On a tragic Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles, a car driven by an elderly woman crashed into a grocery store, resulting in three fatalities and multiple injuries. The incident occurred near UCLA at the 99 Ranch Market on Westwood Boulevard.
According to Los Angeles Fire Department Spokesperson Lyndsey Lantz, the collision was reported at around 12:10 p.m. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, having been outside the market when the vehicle struck them. When emergency responders arrived, they found several people trapped under the car and worked to extricate them.
The incident left three victims in serious condition while two others sustained minor injuries. All injured parties were transported to a hospital for treatment, officials from the fire department confirmed.
Amid speculations about the nature of the crash, LAFD Cpt. Eric Scott stated that preliminary investigations suggested the crash was unintentional. He explained that the driver, in her 70s, may have been attempting to avoid a bicyclist when she accidentally drove her silver sedan into the store’s entrance.
Police confirmed that neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the collision. Further, the Los Angeles Police Department has ruled out intentional misconduct as a cause.
The condition of the bicyclist, who was also hit during the incident, remains unknown. Authorities noted that the elderly driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
While the front of the building and its glass doors were damaged, the structural integrity of the 99 Ranch Market was not at risk, Scott assured.
“We are heartbroken by this situation. Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and we are holding everyone affected, customers, team members, and the broader community in our thoughts during this tough time,”
a representative from 99 Ranch Market expressed, emphasizing the store’s cooperation with authorities.
In response to the tragedy, LA Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky, who represents the Westwood neighborhood, stated,
“My heart is with those injured and with the families of those who lost their lives. Thank you to the first responders on scene for their swift action.”
As investigations continue, the community remains in mourning for the lives lost and calls for a thorough examination of the circumstances to prevent future tragedies.
