On February 11, 2026, a Russian drone attack tragically impacted a family in Ukraine’s northeast Kharkiv region. According to Oleh Syniehubov, head of the regional government, the strike targeted a home in the city of Bohodukhiv, resulting in the loss of a 34-year-old ex-Ukrainian soldier, Grygoriy Shykula, and his three young children. The children’s mother, heavily pregnant at 35 weeks, sustained serious injuries and was left in critical condition.
The local administration later confirmed the heartbreaking news via social media, stating that Shykula, along with his two-year-old twin boys and their one-year-old sister, perished in the attack. The drone obliterated the house, trapping the family beneath the rubble. Emergency responders managed to rescue the mother, who suffered from blast injuries, burns, and a traumatic brain injury.
A photograph shared by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine depicted firefighters attempting to extinguish the blaze caused by the alleged Russian drone strike in Zolochiv village, northeast Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. Bohodukhiv, a city close to the Russian border with a pre-war population of about 15,000, had been subject to relentless Russian aerial assaults in recent weeks.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine shared on the Telegram app, “The Russians once again attacked the private sector of Bohodukhiv with a strike drone. The impact hit a residential building, which was completely destroyed.”
Since Russia launched its full-blown invasion of Ukraine nearly four years ago on February 24, 2022, civilian infrastructure has repeatedly come under attack. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has frequently called upon Ukraine’s allies for more advanced air defense systems to safeguard civilians from these relentless strikes.
An analysis by the Kiel Institute in Germany noted a 15% reduction in foreign military aid to Ukraine in 2025. In response to the recent attack, Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of intensified pressure on Russia for a resolution. He stated, “Each such Russian strike undermines the credibility of everything being done in diplomacy to end this war, and proves again and again that tough pressure on Russia and clear security guarantees for Ukraine are the real key to ending the killings.”
Amid the ongoing conflict, Russia launched 129 drones into Ukraine, leading to at least five fatalities and damaging essential energy infrastructure around Zaporizhzhia. This occurred despite a brief “energy truce” previously announced by President Trump as his administration pursued trilateral negotiations with Ukraine and Russia.
The trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi, which included a prisoner exchange, fell short of addressing substantial obstacles to a broader peace agreement. President Trump set a June deadline for Ukraine and Russia to reach a settlement, warning of increased U.S. pressure if they fell short.
Simultaneously, Russian officials reported a Ukrainian drone attack igniting a fire at an industrial plant in Volgograd, temporarily suspending operations at eight Russian airports.
