Trial of Texas Teen in High School Stabbing Case

The murder trial of 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony began in Texas, with prosecutors and the defense providing different narratives about the incident. Anthony, charged with the stabbing death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet, claims self-defense, according to his lawyer, Mike Howard.

Defense and Prosecution Arguments

Howard stated that Anthony acted out of “fear and chaos.” He noted that after Anthony used the knife in self-defense, he didn’t stab again and dropped the weapon. Prosecutor Bill Wirskye countered this claim, asserting that the case involves “unjustified provoked murder.” He stressed that race did not play a role in the case, despite the fact that Anthony is Black and Metcalf was white.

Jury Selection Controversy

A civil rights group, Next Generation Action Network, criticized the jury’s composition, noting the absence of Black jurors and accusing the prosecution of barring them. The organization insisted on fairness and equal justice while respecting the court’s processes.

Details of the Incident

Metcalf’s father, Jeff, recounted that his son, who had a 4.0 GPA and was an MVP in football, was stabbed in the chest and died in his twin brother’s arms. The family described Austin as a promising young man on the right path, headed for college.

Case Developments

Following the incident in June 2025, Anthony was charged with first-degree murder. Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis acknowledged the community’s emotional response to the event. If convicted, Anthony, considered an adult under Texas law, could face a sentence ranging from 5 years to life in prison.

Anthony has been released on a $250,000 bond and is under house arrest. He successfully graduated high school with a 3.7 GPA, although barred from senior graduation activities.

Community Support

A crowdfunding campaign has raised over $1.4 million to support Anthony’s legal and relocation expenses, highlighting the significant public support and attention this case has garnered.
