Trump Administration’s Controversial Repairs to Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced that there will be no new bids solicited for repairing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The project has faced scrutiny over costs and accountability. Like President Donald Trump, Burgum attributes the damage to vandalism.

Burgum stated the Reflecting Pool suffered a 350-foot gash during recent renovations. The repairs require the pool to be partially drained. He confirmed that the same contractor will handle the repairs due to their previous satisfactory work. Burgum highlighted that the damage could cost tens of thousands of dollars, potentially classifying it as a felony.

President Trump pledged to enhance the Reflecting Pool before the nation’s 250th birthday. The pool was emptied, and the bottom painted “American flag blue.” However, soon after restoration, an algae bloom appeared, and the new coating began peeling.

The pool remained closed during Independence Day due to safety concerns related to fireworks. This situation has fueled debates over Trump’s efforts to overhaul various Washington landmarks during his term.

Authorities have made several arrests related to the Reflecting Pool damages, including David Hearn, a former Olympian, charged with felony property destruction. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro accused Hearn of deliberately causing over $1,000 in damage by removing sealant.

Burgum declined to comment on whether there is photographic evidence of vandalism. When asked about Hearn’s potential 10-year sentence, he stated, “The courts will decide.”

Concerns have been raised about no-bid contracts linked to the project. Green Water Solutions and Atlantic Industrial Coatings received significant contracts, raising questions about their past ties to Trump. Legislators seek clarification on these agreements.
