Trump and Meloni Engage in Feud Over Alleged G7 Summit Incident and Iran War Stance

President Donald Trump has once more ridiculed Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, alleging that she repeatedly requested a photo with him during the G7 Summit in France this week. He further criticized her for insufficient support regarding the U.S. conflict with Iran.

Trump posted on Truth Social, claiming, “Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni asked, over and over, for a picture with me during the G-7 meeting in France.” He expressed his dissatisfaction with Meloni’s actions during the summit.

“I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves like this towards his allies,” Meloni told Reuters, expressing her surprise at Trump’s claims.

The ongoing tension between Trump and Meloni escalated, particularly concerning the Iran war. Trump accused Meloni of refusing American military requests, calling it a logistical challenge. Italy had barred U.S. planes from using an airbase in Sicily, as reported by The Guardian.

Trump emphasized that Italy’s actions occurred despite the substantial financial contributions the U.S. makes annually to protect Italy and other NATO allies. He accused Meloni of seeking to mend relations to improve her popularity but dismissed the attempt.

Meloni responded through Instagram, denouncing the “senseless” criticism and affirming her commitment to Italy’s national interests. She asserted Italy’s sovereignty and rebuffed Trump’s remarks about her popularity.

Previously, Meloni and Trump shared a robust relationship, as she was the only EU leader invited to his 2025 inauguration. Both leaders align on conservative values, opposing “woke” ideologies. However, tensions arose over U.S. tariffs and Trump’s remarks about Pope Leo’s foreign policy stance on Iran.

In addressing Iran’s nuclear goals, Meloni has consistently advocated for diplomacy. During the last year’s G7 Summit, she emphasized the importance of negotiations to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Recent U.S.-Iran talks have encountered delays due to conflicts in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah. However, discussions are set to resume in Switzerland following a ceasefire agreement.
