Three individuals lost their lives and nearly 20 first responders were quarantined on Wednesday after exposure to a mysterious substance at a residence in New Mexico. Authorities reported that the New Mexico State Police responded around 11 a.m. to a home in Mountainair, New Mexico, to support the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office regarding a suspected overdose involving an unknown substance.

According to a police statement, four individuals were found unresponsive inside the residence, with three being pronounced dead. As a result of exposure to the substance, 18 first responders experienced symptoms such as nausea and dizziness.

A total of 18 first responders were affected and began experiencing symptoms such as nausea and dizziness.

Authorities transported the fourth individual from the residence, alongside the exposed first responders, to the University of New Mexico Hospital for quarantine, evaluation, and monitoring. Among the first responders, two remain in serious condition.

Mountainair Mayor Peter Nieto stated that three of the four EMTs in Mountainair EMS have been released from the hospital. However, EMS Chief Josh Lewis, the first to enter the residence, will stay in the hospital overnight for observation.

Investigators indicated that they do not believe the unidentified substance is airborne. Albuquerque Fire Rescue hazmat teams are actively working to identify the substance, assumed to spread through contact.

A secure perimeter has been established around the affected residence, and authorities stressed there is no threat to the public. Mayor Nieto mentioned on Facebook that initial information suggests narcotics might be a factor. However, investigations continue to confirm the facts before drawing final conclusions.

Mountainair Public Works clarified that carbon monoxide and natural gas are not related to the incident.

This situation remains under investigation, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
