The San Antonio Spurs faced a significant setback in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, marked by an unfortunate incident involving NBA star Victor Wembanyama. As the Spurs made their way back to their hotel, Wembanyama was struck by an egg apparently thrown by Knicks fans. This occurrence was captured on social media, depicting security personnel escorting Wembanyama into a New York City hotel while at least one egg was hurled in his direction.
This incident is the latest in a series of unruly behaviors displayed by Knicks fans in recent days. Following San Antonio’s Game 3 victory, tensions flared beyond the arena. Videos shared on social media seemingly depicted confrontations between Knicks fans and Spurs supporters, some of whom were seen with their jerseys torn off. Wembanyama publicly denounced these actions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining respect in the spirit of the game. “We can’t forget it’s a game,” he stated, urging fans to balance passion with respect.
“If you’re throwing eggs at Victor Wembanyama and beating up people… threatening … or doing anything to people who are wearing Spurs jerseys, just know that you are a disgrace. You’re not disgracing this city, you’re disgracing yourself and everyone who knows you,”
These sentiments were echoed by ESPN host Mike Greenberg, who criticized the behavior of fans during Thursday’s episode of “Get Up.” Greenberg, a native New Yorker, condemned such fan actions as disgraceful.
Earlier, a watch party in New York City transformed into a chaotic scene following the Spurs’ 115-111 triumph in Game 3. Multiple fights erupted near Bryant Park in Midtown Manhattan. According to the New York Police Department, 21 arrests were made — including 13 for disorderly conduct and eight for more serious charges like assaulting officers and criminal possession of weapons. Those arrested for disorderly conduct were eventually released.
The Knicks’ journey to the NBA Finals is their first since 1999, during which they lost to the Spurs. New York is seeking its first NBA championship win since 1973. As the Finals move back to San Antonio for Game 5, the potential for Game 6’s return to New York keeps tensions high.
