In the closing moments of the game, Giovanni Reyna of the U.S. scored his team’s fourth goal with a stunning strike from just inside the 18-yard box. Using the outside of his boot, he curled the ball in to secure a 4-1 victory for the United States in their first match.

Earlier, Ricardo Pepi, who came on as a substitute for Folarin Balogun, missed a chance to extend the lead, firing over the bar. Fellow substitute Sebastian Berhalter also missed an opportunity to catch the Paraguayan goalkeeper, Orlando Gill, off his line. Nevertheless, the U.S. held a comfortable lead as the game neared its end.

The officials announced seven minutes of stoppage time. Meanwhile, Paraguay managed to pull a goal back with Maurício scoring off a simple ball over the top, assisted by Julio Enciso, bringing the score to 3-1.

In a game where the U.S. stalled offensively at times, the mood in the stadium shifted as Paraguay’s midfielder Maurício scored. The U.S. struggled with possession in the second half, and the energy in the stadium became more subdued.

Notably, U.S. player Tyler Adams received a yellow card, one of the few setbacks for the Americans during the match. A substitution saw Christian Pulisic exit at halftime, prompting questions about whether it was due to injury or strategic rest for future matches.

The officials corrected a mistaken identity after a yellow card was initially given to U.S. defender Tim Ream. Replay review switched the caution to Paraguay’s Miguel Almirón, who was found guilty of diving.

During the first half, the U.S. showcased dominance. Folarin Balogun scored twice, including a disallowed goal due to offside before netting his second just before halftime to make it 3-0. The U.S. team was commanding in possession, controlling the ball 75% of the time and leading in shots on target.

This impressive performance in the first half was hailed as the best 45 minutes under coach Mauricio Pochettino. The team won comfortably, overwhelming Paraguay’s backline.

The match took place at Los Angeles Stadium, marking the return of the World Cup to American soil for the first time since 1994. Fans filled the stadium, with some paying high prices for tickets, eager to see the U.S. play.

Prior to the match, excitement was high. Cultural events, including a performance by Katy Perry, marked the opening ceremony. The U.S. squad, featuring key players like Weston McKennie, was introduced with no major surprises in the lineup.

The game underscored the importance of goal differential for group placement, with the U.S. aiming for a strong position to face potentially weaker opponents in future knockout rounds.

This match set a tone for the U.S.’s World Cup journey, promising a competitive edge and strategic gameplay as they advance in the tournament.
