Vita Vea’s Trade Request Sparks Speculation Amid Contract Dispute

14 hours ago 0

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, has requested a trade. Vea seeks to leave Tampa following stalled negotiations over a contract extension. He is currently in the final year of a four-year, $71 million contract signed in 2022, and he has been pushing for an extension throughout the offseason.

As a native of California, Vea has been connected to several West Coast teams. The San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Chargers, and Los Angeles Rams are notable mentions. However, Rams head coach Sean McVay seemed to dismiss the idea of pursuing Vea. On the “Up & Adams” show, McVay acknowledged, “He’s a stud… always been a problem to game plan against, but I think we feel good about our group right now.”

The Rams appear to be gearing up for a Super Bowl push. Earlier this offseason, they made a massive trade, acquiring Myles Garrett, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year who recently set a league record with 23 sacks in 17 games. With a senior quarterback in Matthew Stafford and a potential contract extension for All-Pro receiver Puka Nacua, which may reset the market, their Super Bowl aspirations are clear. Rumors suggest they are even considering bringing back Aaron Donald, indicating openness to acquiring an elite defensive tackle.

Though Vea is 31 and had a below-average season with the Buccaneers, his stats remain impressive. Last year, he recorded 34 combined tackles, seven for loss, 13 quarterback hits, 4.5 sacks, and one fumble recovery over 17 games. He has maintained four or more sacks for five consecutive seasons, and his 70.2 PFF grade ranked 20th among tackles. His 51 total pressures ranked him seventh in the NFL.

Adding Vea to a Rams lineup already featuring Garrett, Kobie Turner, Byron Young, Braden Fiske, Omar Speights, and Nate Landman could create a formidable front seven. The main concerns are what the Rams would be willing to trade for Vea and whether they can provide him with a long-term deal.
