Bremen High Students Shine in Distinguished Young Women of Illinois Program

4 days ago 0

Two Bremen High School students, Maya Contreras and Sophia Lara, plan to be the first in their families to attend college. They are moving towards their goal by participating in the Distinguished Young Women of Illinois program, which offers scholarships and recognition at the state level. Both students have roots in Mexico and understand the financial challenges of pursuing higher education, making scholarships crucial to their aspirations.

Maya Contreras: A Passion for Culture and Communication

Contreras, from Midlothian, contributes to her community by volunteering at Braves Closet. This initiative at her school provides clothing and toiletries to students in need. She has also supported school mental health efforts. Her kindness and commitment led her to advance in the Distinguished Young Women competition.

She had the opportunity to perform a Mexican folklore dance from Nayarit, showcasing her cultural heritage. Her involvement extends to the National Honor Society, PEP club, poms, speech team, and Student Council. Additionally, she helped establish the school’s mariachi band and participates in the band, jazz ensemble, theater, and cross country.

Contreras aims to pursue a career in digital media and communication, inspired by her mother’s IT background, while also dreaming of acting. The judges were impressed with her Folklorico dance and engaging interview, as noted by Tiana Pequette, the program’s chairwoman.

Sophia Lara: Healthcare Aspirations and Step Dance Mastery

Sophia Lara, from Posen, is a passionate dancer and athlete. At Bremen High School, she participates in the step team and Fuego dancing. Step dance, with its emotional expression and precision, challenged her initially, but she grew in confidence. Lara is a DECA state finalist, holds a Student Council executive position, and is active in varsity soccer and POMS.

Her interest in healthcare is noteworthy. She completed the Medicina Academy Apprentice Program at the University of Illinois Chicago, gaining skills in college and career readiness. This summer, she will join a research study at Lurie Children’s Hospital. Inspired by asthma prevalence among Black and Mexican-born children on the South Side, Lara aims to become a respiratory therapist. Her passion stems from her mother’s experience with asthma.

Judges appreciated Lara’s impressive dance talent and articulate presentation during the interview process. Pequette highlighted her strong step dance and communication skills.

Future Opportunities and Recognition

Sara Ocampo and Tuleen Duweik from Andrew High School in Tinley Park also reached the finals. Pequette remarked on the ambition and dedication of all finalists, viewing them as future leaders. The state showcase is scheduled for July 26 at Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park. The event will include talent coaching and an awards ceremony, with scholarships awarded to winners.

Those selected will proceed to the national finals in Mobile, Alabama, in June 2027, competing for additional scholarships.
