On May 27, 2026, preparations for the FIFA World Cup were underway at the PATH train station in the World Trade Center transportation hub in New York City. The event is scheduled from June 11 to July 19. This international sports event is expected to attract large crowds to New York City and New Jersey.

Visitors will experience a significantly revamped transportation infrastructure. Extensive upgrades have been implemented across the bus, metro, road, and train systems to accommodate the influx of fans. The excitement may be heightened by the potential overlap with the NBA championship series, featuring the New York Knicks against the San Antonio Spurs.

During a press conference, New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed confidence in the city’s ability to manage the events. She encouraged tourists to visit and experience the bustling atmosphere. “We can handle this, we got this, this is what we do best,” she stated. The Knicks will host games against the Spurs at Madison Square Garden on June 8 and 10, with a possible third game on June 16.

The New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. will host Soccer World Cup matches, starting with Brazil vs. Morocco on June 13. To accommodate up to a hundred thousand extra mass transit riders, the Metropolitan Transit Authority has developed a detailed plan. Governor Hochul noted, “We normally handle 6 million riders a day, so this is something within our control.”

Key transit adjustments include expanded bus and subway services and specific lane closures to create smooth travel corridors for buses and emergency vehicles. Construction and deliveries in certain areas will be restricted to ease traffic congestion. Mayor Zohran Mamdani encouraged city residents to avoid driving and opt for bikes, subways, or walking.

If the NBA Finals game takes place in Manhattan on June 16, officials are prepared, coinciding with the World Cup match between France and Senegal at the New Jersey stadium. Mamdani reaffirmed the city’s readiness, “This is a moment we’ve been preparing for, we’ve been hoping for and we feel fully prepared for.”

Security is a priority, with measures in place to mitigate crime and terrorism risks. Governor Hochul assured that New York’s subway system crime rate is at a 16-year low. State and local officials are focused on ensuring safety amid challenges like high heat, potential flash floods, and increased traffic.

The culmination of the World Cup will be on July 19, with the championship match at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
