Royal Cottages and Controversies: Financial and Legal Revelations

7 hours ago 0

The former Prince Andrew engaged in subletting activities on the estate where he lived without rent for twenty years. This was revealed in a report on the royal family’s properties by the U.K. public spending watchdog. The report also detailed that his daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, reside in rent-controlled palace properties financed by their uncle, King Charles III.

The National Audit Office disclosed that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor earned income from renting out cottages on the Royal Lodge estate. This estate was his residence near Windsor Castle for over two decades. A 2003 lease highlighted that he paid a nominal fee, known as a “peppercorn rent,” for the property. This estate featured a 30-room mansion and eight cottages, with three available for subletting.

The report did not specify the income amount, an omission noted by Margaret Hodge, a Labour member of the House of Lords and former head of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, as concerning. She criticized the inability of the National Audit Office to ascertain the earnings from these lettings.

The audit office review, prompted by lawmakers, followed Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s loss of royal titles and his eviction from Royal Lodge by his brother, King Charles III. These actions were a response to his controversial relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, a late convicted sex offender. Mountbatten-Windsor relocated earlier this year to the Sandringham Estate in eastern England.

Earlier this year, the former prince faced arrest and police questioning regarding allegations of public office misconduct. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has not faced charges.

The Royals’ Housing Arrangements

The report highlights that 11 working royals receive free housing within palaces in return for their official duties. These include the king and Queen Camilla, Prince William and his wife Catherine, as well as the king’s youngest brother, Prince Edward, and his wife Sophie. William and Kate also lease a family home near Windsor, with an annual rent of 307,200 pounds (approximately $413,000).

Rents for Eugenie’s cottage in Kensington Palace and Beatrice’s apartment in St. James’s Palace are set at a percentage of open-market value, ranging from 50% to 68%. These rents are paid from the Privy Purse, the monarch’s private funds. Both princesses are not categorized as “working” royals and maintain external careers.

Buckingham Palace stated that the audit office report aligns with the royal household’s transparency efforts. They hope the findings will help rectify and provide context regarding royal properties.

Critics pointed to the findings as indicating that the royal family does not sufficiently contribute financially. Norman Baker, a former Liberal Democrat lawmaker and critic of royal finances, asserted that Andrew having a peppercorn rent for an expansive property, while potentially earning significant amounts from subletting, showed disregard for taxpayers.

The Prince’s Links to Epstein

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s connection to Epstein is documented extensively in materials released by the U.S. Department of Justice. These revealed how Epstein manipulated a network of affluent, influential friends to exert power and exploit young women and girls sexually.

British authorities are assessing allegations that Mountbatten-Windsor transmitted confidential trade data to Epstein during his tenure as a U.K. trade envoy from 2001 to 2011. Police might expand their investigation to cover allegations of sexual misconduct and have invited witnesses to come forward.

Since relocating to the Sandringham Estate, about 100 miles north of London, Mountbatten-Windsor has been seldom seen in public. Recently, he appeared in photographs with a noticeable bruise on his face. The Times of London reported, without identifying sources, that the bruise was due to a nonserious medical condition.
