Tom Cruise continues to impress with his acting and stunt work. Beau Bridges, his co-star in “Jerry Maguire,” commended the 63-year-old actor for his consistent improvement over the years. “I really appreciated working with him,” Bridges shared with People during the “Matlock” For Your Consideration event. He praised Cruise’s dedication, saying, “He’s a wonderful actor and improves with age. He’s still doing all those remarkable stunts.”
Bridges is not alone in recognizing Cruise’s daring stunts. Earlier this year, Ethan Hawke expressed his views on Cruise’s influence in Hollywood. Hawke mentioned that he feels some frustration over the increased expectations for actors to perform their stunts. “Tom Cruise has reshaped what is expected of actors,” Hawke explained at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. He noted the growing pressure on actors to reduce the use of stunt teams.
Cruise has never been part of a superhero franchise, yet he is regarded as an action-movie icon. His insistence on performing dangerous, real-world stunts in popular films like “Mission: Impossible,” “Top Gun,” and “Jack Reacher” has defined his career. Recently, while working on “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” Cruise faced a nearly back-breaking challenge. One notable scene involved a high-stakes biplane battle alongside Esai Morales.
The scene required Cruise’s character, Ethan Hunt, to leap from one plane to another. During the sequence, Cruise clung to a plane’s wing midair, recalling, “Oh, this almost broke my back,” according to Entertainment Weekly.
Director Christopher McQuarrie shared insights from the film’s digital release bonus content. “This scene was intense,” McQuarrie noted, adding that Cruise’s hands swelled from the force of the stunt. In the scene, Cruise’s character endured a crash into the aircraft’s side, a moment the actor described as “brutal.” McQuarrie joked, “And you improvised that. Thank you very much. You were like, ‘I think we’re gonna need that,’ and I was like, ‘I didn’t ask you to do that.’”
