Ammonia Leak Triggers Health Alerts in Boyle Heights

A fire accompanied by an ammonia gas leak at a cold storage facility in Boyle Heights led to various health warnings concerning air quality.

Shelter-in-Place Advisory

A shelter-in-place order was in effect from areas south of the 101 Freeway to Washington Boulevard, and east of Soto Street to Indiana Street. Residents in these zones were advised to:

  • Close all windows and doors.
  • Turn off air conditioning and heating systems.
  • Bring all people and pets indoors.
  • Seal off vents.

Smoke Advisory

A smoke advisory covered a large part of East Los Angeles. People were urged to limit outdoor exercise and individuals with health concerns were advised to stay indoors. Los Angeles County recommended residents in Montebello, Monterey Park, and surrounding areas to proceed with caution outdoors. Those sensitive to health conditions were advised to stay inside, keep doors and windows closed, and minimize outdoor activities. Any emergencies should be reported by calling 911.

The National Weather Service projected southwest winds between 6 and 12 mph to persist into the evening.

Evacuations

A small number of people closest to the fire site were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
