Maine Voters React to Graham Platner’s Controversial Past
Maine’s Democratic Senate candidate, Graham Platner, is facing scrutiny due to past allegations of abuse from former girlfriends and the controversy surrounding a tattoo he once had. Reports are emerging about the varied opinions of Maine voters as Platner gears up for the upcoming primary against GOP incumbent Sen. Susan Collins.
Fox News correspondent Alexis McAdams has highlighted the divided opinions among voters in Maine. The support provided by Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna for Platner is also noteworthy.
HBO’s ‘Real Time’ host Bill Maher endorsed Platner, expressing support for his candidacy despite noting some concerning views and actions attributed to him. Maher stated, “I would still urge the folks in Maine to vote for him, for two reasons. One, we need to restore balance in our government, and a Democratic Senate would help a lot with that.” He added, “And two, get used to it. America is a country filled with a lot of broken, horribly educated, phone-addicted, sort of nutty people. And as long as we live in a representative democracy, we are always electing our reflection in the mirror.” Maher mentioned that Platner’s views on handling a home invasion by asserting dominance were not the most unsettling aspect of his candidacy.
“If anybody ever broke in here, I would rape them,” Platner allegedly stated, according to former girlfriend Lyndsey Fifield. Platner reportedly clarified the act would not be sexual but intended to assert power.
Beyond these personal controversies, Platner’s campaign has been affected by his off-color remarks on several sensitive subjects, including race and sexual abuse, as well as perceived threats towards women. A tattoo resembling the Nazi “Totenkopf” or Death’s Head has also drawn criticism.
Maher remarked, “I mean, seriously, this guy’s whole life is the movie ‘The Hangover’. He doesn’t need a term in the Senate. He needs a gap year in Costa Rica.” Despite his criticisms, Maher encouraged Maine voters to support Platner.
During the segment, Maher also commented on President Donald Trump’s communication style, linking it to a new trend in politics where outrageous behavior or statements seem to have little political consequence.
Platner addressed supporters at a watch party after securing the Democratic nomination. He will confront Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the forthcoming election.
