3 hours ago 0

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia launched a massive overnight attack on Ukraine, utilizing hundreds of drones and numerous missiles to target the nation’s largest cities. Officials reported at least 11 casualties and significant damage to a renowned religious site. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and others provided these updates on Monday.

Intensified Assaults on Kyiv and Kharkiv

The strikes focused on Kyiv, the capital, and Kharkiv, the second-largest city. This escalation came after separate phone discussions between Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday. These talks indicate ongoing U.S. diplomatic efforts to address the conflict sparked by Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

The conflict is expected to be a major topic of the upcoming discussions by G7 leaders in France. President Zelenskyy and President Trump will attend, with Zelenskyy wanting to ensure that Ukraine’s challenges remain in focus.

This is how Russia shows the world its intention to continue the war,” President Zelenskyy commented in a message on X, referencing the attacks on civilian sites.

He emphasized the need for a strong G7 response to increase pressure on Russia and bolster Ukraine’s air defenses, particularly against ballistic missiles.

Civilian Impact and Military Targets

Russian strikes resulted in at least 11 civilian deaths and numerous injuries across Ukraine. In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported five fatalities along with over 30 injuries, among the wounded were two young children. Strikes in Kyiv included a series of explosions as people sought refuge underground. Clouds of black smoke spread over the city.

Five hits occurred in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district within a half-hour, targeting various civilian locations including a 25-story apartment building, a market, and a grocery store. Additionally, a nine-story residential building in the Obolonskyi district suffered a direct hit.

Russia’s Defense Ministry stated that the attacks targeted defense and industrial facilities in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. They included facilities believed to produce components for long-range drones and cruise missiles. Among the claimed targets were a workshop at the Dovzhenko film studios and production sites for Ukraine’s Flamingo missiles.

Damage to Cultural Heritage

A prominent religious site, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, suffered during the onslaught. Smoke surrounded its golden domes as the Dormition Cathedral caught fire. Metropolitan Epiphanius of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine condemned the attack, labeling it a crime against humanity and history.

The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, known as the Monastery of the Caves, is a UNESCO World Heritage site comprising monasteries and churches built between the 11th and 19th centuries. Zelenskyy described the event as a severe crime against Christian culture. He visited the damaged site along with Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko and others.

The complex has historical significance, overlooking the Dnieper River and serving as a long-standing pilgrimage destination. In response, Ukraine’s UNESCO commission urged global action to halt the invasion and suggested expelling Russia from the organization.

Russia’s Defense Ministry disputed the responsible party, suggesting the complex was struck by a Ukrainian missile that malfunctioned.

Extensive Aerial Offensive

Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 70 missiles and 611 drones overnight, primarily aimed at Kyiv but also impacting Dnipro and Kharkiv. Air defenses managed to intercept or electronically disrupt 632 targets including missiles and drones. Debris from intercepted drones caused damage at multiple sites.
