Trump’s Dual Endorsement in South Carolina Runoff

4 hours ago 0

President Donald Trump has made a last-minute decision to endorse both candidates in the Republican gubernatorial runoff in South Carolina. On Friday, Trump announced on Truth Social that he is supporting both South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette. He explained, ‘I can’t hurt one of them by only endorsing the other.’

This move is seen as hedging his bets since Trump has already been backing Evette, who also receives the endorsement of outgoing Republican Gov. Henry McMaster, a strong ally of Trump. As the candidates compete for the GOP nomination to replace McMaster, Trump’s endorsement is viewed as a significant show of his influence within the Republican Party.

Endorsement History

This is not the first instance where Trump has endorsed multiple candidates in one race. He previously supported both Gina Swoboda and Jay Feely in an upcoming Arizona primary. In the 2022 Missouri Senate race, Trump endorsed ‘ERIC,’ leading both Eric Schmitt and Eric Greitens to claim his support, with Schmitt eventually securing the nomination.

South Carolina Gubernatorial Race

In the recent primary, Evette topped the field, with Wilson coming second. Other candidates included Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, as well as businessman Rom Reddy. With no candidate winning a majority, Evette and Wilson entered a runoff.

Mace and Norman endorsed Wilson after failing to advance. Wilson also received backing from Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas. In the final debate, the candidates exchanged personal attacks and accusations of dishonesty.

Wilson emphasized his experience as attorney general and military veteran, while Evette positioned herself as a Trump-endorsed business outsider, labeling Wilson a career politician.

The last Democratic victory in a South Carolina governor’s race was 28 years ago. Thus, the GOP nominee is likely to be favored in the upcoming election against Democratic nominee Jermaine Johnson.

Trump’s Endorsements in Other States

Trump’s influence was recently displayed in the ousting of incumbents in Republican primaries in states like Indiana, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Texas. However, a setback occurred when his endorsement of Rep. Randy Feenstra in Iowa fell short against Zach Lahn, who was backed by MAHA and Turning Point USA.

Overall, Trump’s endorsed candidates have experienced mixed results, with both successes and defeats in various races.
