Mohamed Salah Ignites Egypt’s World Cup Aspirations with Historic Victory

3 hours ago 0

Mohamed Salah entered the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup with determination and a focus on training. “We need to focus on our camp and train hard. We’ll see in the group,” Salah shared with ESPN. His words reflected a man grounded in reality, aware of the challenges ahead as Egypt sought to reclaim its World Cup prowess.

Salah’s pivotal role in qualifying Egypt was notable. His goal in October 2017 ended Egypt’s long absence from the World Cup. However, the team’s 2018 journey in Russia ended in disappointment, losing all three group matches. Egypt missed the 2022 qualification altogether, making their current campaign crucial.

Fueled by ambition, Salah demonstrated exceptional skill against New Zealand at BC Place, Vancouver, on June 21. Despite an early setback from Finn Surman’s 15th-minute goal, Mostafa Zico’s response in the 58th minute leveled the match. The spotlight then shifted to Salah, who scored in the 67th minute and assisted Trezeguet’s goal in the 82nd, securing a 3-1 comeback victory. This marked Egypt’s first win in World Cup history.

“Today’s victory is historic for us as Egyptians,” Salah remarked. “For many teams, winning is routine. For us, such moments are rare.”

This win followed Egypt’s surprising 1-1 draw with Belgium, where Salah was crucial once more. With 4 points, Egypt leads Group G. Salah’s performance continues to captivate spectators, rekindling the excitement seen during his nine-year stint with Liverpool.

The Athletic reports Egypt’s chances to advance to the knockout stage are over 99%, with a 61% probability of winning Group G. Egypt’s previous appearance in the knockout stage was back in 1934. As they prepare to face Iran at Lumen Field in Seattle on June 26, Egypt aims to solidify their standing and progress further.
