Severe Winter Weather Threatens East Coast with Freezing Temperatures and Heavy Snow

In Nashville, Tennessee, with temperatures lingering in the teens, the situation was dire for more than 47,000 residents still without power. Terry Miles, 59, revealed his home had been without electricity since Sunday, forcing him to use a fish fryer for heat, despite concerns about carbon monoxide dangers. Frustrated, he voiced his fears, “I’m taking a chance of killing myself and killing my wife, because — Why?” Miles spoke after attending a Nashville Electric Service news conference aimed at showcasing their repairs on poles and lines.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee expressed “strong concerns” with Nashville Electric Service’s leadership, urging the necessity of a clear power restoration timeline and greater transparency regarding the deployment of linemen and progress in neighborhood repairs. More Snow in the South

According to Oravec, areas in the southern Appalachians, Carolinas, and Georgia might receive between 6 to 10 inches of snow. A bomb cyclone, rapidly intensifying off the Southeast coast with strong winds, could produce blizzard conditions overnight in the Carolinas. Oravec emphasized the dangers of such intense cold, noting, “Anytime you have cold weather advisories or extreme cold warnings, it is dangerous to be outside. Frostbite can occur.” The persistent power outages exacerbate the risks of cold exposure.

In Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where the city’s emblem features the sun, palm trees, and a seagull, 6 inches of snow were anticipated. Unprepared for such snowfall, the city planned to improvise snow removal efforts, according to Mayor Mark Kruea. With subfreezing conditions forecasted into February, heavy snow was anticipated over the weekend in the Carolinas, Virginia, and northeast Georgia, possibly accumulating up to a foot in parts of North Carolina. Snow was also predicted from Maryland to Maine.

Grappling with Freezing Temperatures

Authorities reported that, from Texas to New Jersey, 76 deaths occurred, with causes ranging from hypothermia and exposure to carbon monoxide poisoning and sledding accidents. Specific details remain undisclosed for some cases. Experts warned about the heightened risk of hypothermia and frostbite, particularly in the South where people might lack adequate winter clothing, said Dr. David Nestler, an emergency medicine specialist at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Wind chills were projected to plunge to -20 degrees Fahrenheit in parts of the Ohio Valley by Sunday morning.

In North Carolina, hundreds of National Guard soldiers were on standby to assist, while state workers prepped the roads for potential hazards. In Wake Forest, residents queued to refill propane tanks at Holding Oil and Gas, including José Rosa, who faced difficulty finding available propane. “I’m here in this cold weather, and I don’t like it,” Rosa commented, holding his 20-pound tank.

Concerns also grew in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, particularly in communities like Rodanthe and Buxton, where unoccupied homes faced the risk of collapsing into the Atlantic Ocean. The severe cold is predicted to reach as far south as Florida, with Southern Florida bracing for the coldest temperatures experienced in decades. Record lows are anticipated on Sunday and Monday.
