LSU has made a significant move in college football by recruiting head coach Lane Kiffin from rival SEC team Ole Miss earlier this year. Kiffin garnered attention following a successful season with Ole Miss, achieving an impressive 11-1 record and securing the No. 6 seed in the College Football Playoff. During the playoff, Ole Miss won two games but was eliminated in the semifinals by the Miami Hurricanes.
Since joining LSU, Kiffin has assembled a strong roster using the transfer portal and enhanced his coaching staff further. This effort includes the notable addition of Ed Orgeron announced on Wednesday by the school.
“Ed Orgeron is returning to LSU and will serve as the special assistant to recruiting and defense for the Tigers,” LSU stated on X along with a picture of Orgeron with head coach Lane Kiffin.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel highlighted that Orgeron can actively recruit for LSU due to recent modifications in recruiting regulations. Known as a remarkable recruiter, Orgeron is well-acquainted with LSU and Kiffin, aiding in compelling pitches to potential recruits.
Orgeron is a familiar face to LSU supporters. His stint as head coach from 2016 to 2021 resulted in a 51-20 record, three bowl victories, and a national championship in 2019. Many regard the 2019 championship team as among the greatest college football teams ever.
Thirteen players from that storied squad continue to play in the NFL, including quarterback Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals), wide receivers Justin Jefferson (Minnesota Vikings) and Ja’Marr Chase (Cincinnati Bengals), as well as guards Damien Lewis (Seattle Seahawks) and Ed Ingram (Houston Texans), among others.
Beyond LSU, Orgeron’s head-coaching history at USC in 2013 and Ole Miss from 2005 to 2007 further enhances the Tigers’ coaching capabilities.
