Saturday Updates: Golf, Cannes, and More

2 weeks ago 0

The weather today is rainy, windy, and rather unpleasant. It’s an ideal time to dive into a fresh edition of Saturday Screencaps. I’m grateful for not imposing work on assistant editor SeanJo this weekend. I took half of Friday off to enjoy golf with friends, despite 20 mph winds gusting to 30 mph. By day’s end, I simply wanted shelter, but I managed a decent game overall.

A Star in Cannes

On a brighter note, American Sydney Thomas made an impressive appearance in Cannes, France. This University of Alabama graduate is quickly rising in the public eye. Recently, she participated in celebrity poker, striving to establish herself in pop culture. Her presence at the prestigious amfAR Gala Cannes 2026 confirmed her growing influence. Sydney attended the event at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d’Antibes, showcasing American talent abroad.

Youth and Responsibility

Brandon S., a reader, shared an interesting approach to teaching responsibility. His nine-year-old helped him control weeds using a flamethrower his wife gifted him last Father’s Day. This practical task not only manages their yard but also instills valuable lessons for the future. As he recalls his father’s passing at 66, Brandon emphasizes preparing his children to handle household duties.

Community Cooking

Brad S., another reader, showcased his culinary skills with two slabs of baby-back ribs for a neighborhood competition, using the Meat Church recipe. It’s part of the ‘Show Us Your Meat’ initiative, celebrating grilling for Memorial Day weekend.

Weekend Entertainment

For those indoors due to weather, Mike T. from Idaho suggests the Netflix documentary on Ulysses S. Grant, describing it as exceptionally well-made. In terms of music, Kevin from Naples prompts a discussion about Yacht Rock, highlighting tunes like Dr. Hook’s ‘Sexy Eyes’ and Chuck Mangione’s ‘Feels So Good.’

Moreover, a criticism arises regarding Keith Urban covering Yacht Rock classics. The feeling is that these adaptations detract from the originals, likening them to instances of ‘stolen valor’ in music.

Concluding Thoughts

Although the weekend’s weather is dreary, it’s an opportunity for productive activities like some retail therapy. I’m considering purchasing a Stihl KombiSystem, including an edger and a pole saw, to complete my yard tool collection. Despite appearances, life moves forward, and making the best of such weekends is essential. Have a great weekend, and I’ll return with new updates on Monday.
