Earlier this year, my family and I found ourselves stuck in Los Angeles for three days during a layover to Hawaii. The airline kept canceling our flights, leaving us in a difficult situation. Once we finally made it to Hawaii and back, the ordeal continued with weeks of challenging credit card charge disputes. This experience led me to question: How can we better handle sudden flight delays or cancellations? What steps can we take to prevent this from happening again?
Air travel has become increasingly problematic. According to the Department of Transportation, flight cancellations have risen in 2024 compared to previous years. Travel experts suggest steps to make rebooking less daunting and ensure smoother travel experiences.
Multitask When Rebooking
While you queue at the customer service desk, use the airline app to rebook your flight, says travel reporter Chris Dong. With potentially hundreds of passengers needing assistance, waiting for an agent can be inefficient. Rebooking online usually offers a faster resolution.
Contact Customer Service in Another Language
If online rebooking is not an option and speaking to an agent is necessary, consider calling the customer service line in another language. This alternative can be less congested than the English-language line.
Utilize Airport Lounges for Assistance
If you have access to airport lounges through a travel credit card, seek assistance there. Lounge agents typically have more time to help, and staffing is often better. For those without access, purchasing a day pass could be worthwhile depending on your circumstances.
Understand Airline Entitlements
Know what the airline owes you for cancellations. Check the Department of Transportation’s Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard. Many airlines provide cost-free rebooking, meal vouchers, hotel accommodations, and transport for cancellations due to airline issues.
Review Travel Insurance Coverage
Once you understand airline coverage, check your travel insurance. Many credit cards offer travel insurance, covering issues like trip cancellation and baggage loss. Eulanda Osagiede from Black Travel Alliance recommends choosing independent travel insurance providers for better deals.
Opt for Early Flights
When possible, select early-morning flights to minimize delays or cancellations. According to Dong, early flights are less likely to be impacted by delays, as the aircraft generally stays overnight at the airport.
Get Creative if Stranded
If rebooking isn’t quick, explore other options to reach your destination. Consider buying a one-way ticket on a different airline, taking a train or bus, or flying into a nearby city and driving the rest of the way.
Avoid Third-Party Bookings
Book flights directly with the airline to avoid miscommunication and ensure easier access to assistance in case of itinerary changes.
Be Polite to Customer Service Representatives
If seeking refunds or credits, approach customer service with politeness. Osagiede advises respectful communication to improve your chances of favorable outcomes.
Rethink Non-Refundable Tickets
While cheaper, non-refundable tickets carry risk. They offer no refunds or rescheduling, making travel unpredictable if cancellations occur.
In my situation, I eventually received my money back after persistent efforts. Moving forward, booking directly with the airline, acquiring travel insurance, and preparing backup plans have become essential practices.
