FIFA sought a U.S. city with transit options, ample hotels, soccer enthusiasts, and a large stadium. Chicago met the criteria but opted out, allowing Kansas City to step into the spotlight for the Midwest. Kansas City embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm, as highlighted at the recent IPW international travel conference. Devin Aaron of Visit KC stated, “The city’s ready. This is the biggest event Kansas City has ever hosted, and we aim to excel.”
Kansas City marketed itself as a leading soccer hub in America, attracting national teams from England, Argentina, the Netherlands, and Algeria for their “base camps.” These camps are paired with training facilities and secure hotels, bringing global attention to Kansas City. The city’s free viewing festival aims to be one of the tournament’s main attractions, challenging even New York to surpass its efforts.
Success comes with challenges. While Kansas City has invested in soccer facilities, public transit remains weak. Additional buses are needed to handle the influx of visitors. Hotel rates spiked, driving some guests to find accommodation in nearby areas. Ticket prices soared, but some have been lower on the resale market. Federal funds for security and transit improvements have been limited.
A major issue lies outside Kansas City’s control. Foreign soccer fans face daunting U.S. travel policies introduced by President Donald Trump. Measures include reviewing social-media and family backgrounds. Travel bans target avid soccer regions across Africa and the Middle East. At the IPW conference, special envoy Nick Adams dismissed concerns, urging tourists to “follow our laws” for welcome entry.
Foreign travel to the U.S. dropped, influenced by soured relations with Canada after trade conflicts. Canadian visits fell 22% last year, as reported by the U.S. Travel Association. Its leader, Geoff Freeman, stressed the need to regain trust. Kansas City, however, welcomes all soccer fans, aiming for a successful and inclusive event.
Meanwhile, Chicago’s soccer enthusiasts can look forward to a privately funded stadium for the Chicago Fire team. Although they must travel to Kansas City for World Cup matches, they are encouraged to enjoy the games nonetheless.
