Brussels — A train collided with a school minibus in Belgium on Tuesday, causing multiple casualties, according to the country’s interior minister. While the exact number of victims remains unconfirmed, anonymous sources told the AFP that the collision resulted in fatalities among those on the bus. Reuters also reported similar accounts but authorities have yet to provide official confirmation.
Interior Minister Bernard Quintin expressed his sorrow over the incident in Buggenhout, stating, “With great dismay, I learnt of the tragic accident in Buggenhout, where a school bus was struck by a train. My thoughts go out to the victims and their loved ones. I wish the injured much strength.”
Photographs from the location revealed the minibus lying on its side near the railway crossing, exhibiting significant damage to its front. Emergency personnel were actively working at the site in Vierhuizen, Buggenhout, where the accident took place on May 26, 2026.
Frederic Sacre, a spokesman for the Belgian rail network operator, described the collision as being of extreme violence, calling the toll “dramatic.” “It happened at around 8:08 am when a minibus was struck by a train that was due to stop at the next station, which was about a kilometer away,” he stated.
