The Kennedy Center will host the Mark Twain Award for American Humor ceremony on June 28, honoring Bill Maher. Notable guest speakers such as John Mellencamp, Jay Leno, and Whitney Cummings will be part of the event.
The center recently provided details via email to its members, offering seat reservations starting at $99, with packages going up to $1,500 or more for exclusive pre- and post-show receptions.
A change in the center’s designation has been observed. The announcement came from the Kennedy Center, no longer including the prefix ‘Trump.’ This modification follows a federal judge’s decision that President Donald Trump’s appointed board of trustees improperly voted to add his name to the venue. The Kennedy Center was dedicated to President John F. Kennedy by Congress in 1964, and only Congress can alter its name, as U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper clarified.
Although a representative has mentioned the possibility of appealing, the center’s general counsel has outlined cooperation steps, including removing Trump’s name. During his presidency, Trump had largely overlooked the center initially, but later incorporated it into his mission to eliminate ‘woke’ influences from federal cultural bodies. This led to leadership changes at the center and several performers canceling their appearances, including Issa Rae, Bela Fleck, and Renée Fleming.
Maher becomes the 27th recipient of this prestigious award, joining the ranks of previous honorees like Leno, Steve Martin, and Tina Fey. Maher and Trump have engaged in public disagreements, yet Maher’s independent stance, often critical of Hollywood, has resonated with various audiences. He has hosted interviews with notable figures across the political spectrum, from Jane Fonda to Ben Shapiro.
The upcoming ceremony will also feature guests like comedian Louis C.K., who has resumed touring after facing allegations of misconduct in 2017, and Stephen A. Smith, known for his outspoken views that have sparked debates with figures such as Jaylen Brown and Keith Olbermann.
