Chemical Storage Tank Poses Explosion Risk in Southern California

A chemical storage tank in Southern California poses a significant risk as it continues to heat up, despite efforts to cool it. Concerns about a potential explosion or rupture persist, according to local fire officials.

The tank, located in Garden Grove, became a concern after overheating on Thursday and releasing vapors. This led to the Orange County Fire Authority issuing evacuation orders affecting 40,000 residents. Shelters remain open, providing refuge for evacuees.

Efforts to cool the tank initially seemed effective, but subsequent drone readings disclosed that only the exterior temperature was assessed. Emergency crews have since accessed the temperature gauge directly. The temperature hit 90 degrees, posing a threat since the liquid chemical inside has a flashpoint of 50 degrees Fahrenheit, according to safety experts.

The chemical, methyl methacrylate, can release harmful vapors affecting respiratory health and causing symptoms such as nausea and headaches. To mitigate any potential spill, containment barriers are in place, preventing chemicals from contaminating local waterways.

The tank, containing 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of the chemical, is situated at GKN Aerospace. This company produces parts for the aviation industry. Emergency measures are being implemented to manage the situation. The risk of a catastrophic release requires constant monitoring.

Residents from neighboring cities, including Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster, are also impacted by the evacuation orders. Some evacuees, unable to find shelter, resorted to staying in their cars, awaiting further updates.

One resident, Marco Solano, expressed frustration at the presence of such hazardous materials near residential areas. He noted the added stress exacerbating his medical conditions as he waits for an all-clear to return home.

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Orange County, enabling local agencies access to state resources. This declaration also allows the use of state properties for emergency shelter if required.

This ongoing incident highlights concerns over the location of industrial sites near residential communities, particularly those handling dangerous chemicals.
