On Sunday, pro-Donald Trump candidate Abelardo de la Espriella secured a victory in the first round of Colombia’s presidential election. He will face off against left-leaning senator Iván Cepeda in the runoff scheduled for later this month.
De la Espriella, lacking prior political experience, garnered almost 44% of the votes. Meanwhile, Cepeda received just below 41%, as reported by Colombian media outlets.
The necessity for a runoff arises as no candidate achieved the required 50% to win outright. This decisive election will take place on June 21.
Cepeda has support from the current Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, known for his frequent critiques of Trump on social media. Issues of contention include the U.S.’s contentious strike campaign targeting alleged drug boats, resulting in over 200 fatalities.
In contrast, de la Espriella aligns with regional right-wing leaders, such as Argentina’s Javier Milei and Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele. He portrays himself as a Trump ally, advocating for stronger U.S. ties and a strict stance on organized crime.
The Trump administration views the Western Hemisphere as critical to U.S. influence, asserting military strength beyond its borders. In January, U.S. forces captured former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in Caracas for narco-trafficking charges.
Furthermore, the U.S. has spent nearly nine months executing lethal strikes against suspected drug vessels in the southern Caribbean and eastern Pacific. Military presence near Cuba has intensified, with an ongoing oil blockade and joint anti-drug efforts in Ecuador.
The Trump administration established the “Shield of the Americas” initiative. This coalition includes over a dozen center-right or hard-right leaders supportive of Trump’s policies. The initiative focuses on combating illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and foreign interference in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The situation remains dynamic, with further details yet to emerge.
