Graham Platner, the Democratic Senate nominee in Maine, has navigated several controversies. These controversies have caused concern among Democrats about their ability to win a Senate seat crucial for gaining control. Platner, a Marine Corps veteran and first-time candidate, launched his campaign in August 2025 as a populist challenger to five-term Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
Platner faced initial criticism due to inflammatory Reddit posts and a tattoo associated with Nazi imagery. Gov. Janet Mills’s withdrawal from the Democratic primary race further cleared his path to nomination. However, recent reports about sexually explicit texts sent to several women while married and accusations of mistreating former partners have raised doubts about his electability.
Platner attributes his past behavior to poor mental health and post-traumatic stress disorder following his military service, urging voters to consider Collins’s voting record. He also denied recent allegations from an ex-girlfriend, highlighting her involvement in GOP politics to question her credibility. Some Democrats worry this series of scandals may deter voters, and more damaging information might surface soon.
Timeline of Controversies
October 16, 2025: Resurfaced Reddit Posts
Weeks after Mills entered the race, Platner faced scrutiny for Reddit posts made between 2009 and 2021. The Washington Post reported his dismissive comments on military sexual assault and stated women should take responsibility for themselves to avoid rape. He also referred to rural White Mainers as racist and stupid.
Platner apologized for these posts, stating he was at a low point in 2013 after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, battling PTSD. He urged people to consider his current self rather than past remarks.
October 21, 2025: Tattoo Resembling Nazi Symbol
Platner disclosed plans to cover up a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol with a Celtic knot. He stated the tattoo, obtained in Croatia in 2007 during drinking with Marines, was unknowingly similar to a Totenkopf symbol used by concentration camp guards. An ex-girlfriend claimed he knew its meaning earlier, but his campaign questioned her credibility due to her Republican activism.
October 2025: Campaign Resignations
In mid-to-late October, three senior staffers resigned from Platner’s campaign. Genevieve McDonald resigned as political director citing Platner’s Reddit posts. Campaign manager Kevin Brown left after a few days due to his wife’s pregnancy, followed by finance director Ronald Holmes who cited professional standard differences.
January 20, 2026: Platner Denies Future Controversies
During a CNN interview, Platner asserted no more controversies would emerge in his campaign. He insisted his life was uncomplicated.
March 17, 2026: Janet Mills’s Attack Ads
Maine Governor Janet Mills launched ads featuring women who criticized Platner’s Reddit comments about sexual assault. The ads highlighted a 2013 comment implying women should avoid intoxication to prevent unintended sex. Mills warned that Republicans would exploit Platner’s candidacy.
April 30, 2026: Janet Mills Withdraws
Polls showed Mills trailing Platner, with concerns about her age affecting her campaign. She suspended her candidacy and cited a lack of financial support. Democratic leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, endorsed Platner following her withdrawal.
May 30, 2026: Sexually Explicit Texts
The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times reported that Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, informed his campaign of sexually explicit texts he sent to other women post-marriage in 2023. Platner admitted to errors early in his marriage, emphasizing that he and his wife have resolved the issues. Gertner publicly supported him despite the revelations.
June 4, 2026: Allegations of Volatile Relationships
The New York Times reported that some of Platner’s ex-girlfriends described volatile relationships. One accused him of physical restraint, which he denied. Platner admitted to being an imperfect boyfriend and attributed it to PTSD. The allegations led to Democratic critique of his candidacy.
June 9, 2026: Platner Wins Nomination
Platner secured the Democratic nomination to oppose Collins in the November election. In his victory speech, he criticized the media’s focus on past incidents instead of broader issues, highlighting the campaign’s collective nature.
July 13, 2026: Deadline for Platner’s Withdrawal
Platner faces a deadline to withdraw if further scandals arise or victory seems unlikely. His withdrawal would allow the Maine Democratic Party to nominate a replacement at a convention. Many critics deem this unlikely as it could upset his supporters.
