In the thrilling first half of the United States’ World Cup opener against Paraguay, Christian Pulisic impressed fans. The forward from Hershey, Pennsylvania, who currently plays for AC Milan, made a pivotal contribution by assisting on the team’s second goal scored by Folarin Balogun.

However, concerns emerged when Pulisic did not return to the field for the second half. Instead, Sebastian Berhalter, the son of former USMNT player and coach Gregg Berhalter, took his place. Neither team officials nor coaches initially provided a reason for Pulisic’s substitution.

During the FOX Sports broadcast, commentators noted that Pulisic signaled to his family in the stands, reassuring them that he was fine. After the match, USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino explained the decision to substitute Pulisic. According to The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, Pochettino clarified that Pulisic received a kick to the calf, leading to some muscle tightness. The coach emphasized that removing him was a precautionary measure to prevent further injury.

The incident sparked concern among fans, particularly given Pulisic’s injury history. Last summer, he opted out of the Gold Cup to recover after playing a demanding 50 matches with AC Milan. The subsequent season also saw him deal with multiple injuries. Most recently, ESPN reported that he missed a game last month due to a lower-back issue.

Despite the precaution, Pulisic’s absence was felt in the second half. Fans will likely remain anxious until he returns to the field fully recovered. His presence is crucial to the USMNT’s performance.
