Fauci and Paul Dispute Over COVID-19 Diary Entries

Senator Rand Paul, from Kentucky, recently shared diary entries from Dr. Fauci, covering the COVID-19 pandemic period in a 1,141-page document. Initially available over the weekend, the document disappeared from the website by Monday. This release precedes Fauci’s upcoming testimony before a Senate committee scheduled for Wednesday.

A noted conflict between Fauci and some politicians, including Senator Paul, revolves around the origins of the coronavirus. Throughout the pandemic, Paul and Fauci, a prominent figure on the White House’s Coronavirus Task Force, publicly disagreed on the virus’s beginnings. Despite Fauci stepping down from his NIAID role at the end of 2022, Paul continued probing into the origins of COVID-19 and the associated research funded by taxpayer money. On Saturday afternoon, Paul announced on X that he had released a series of Fauci’s diary entries spanning from December 2019 to December 2022, stating, “What [Fauci] wrote privately and what he told the country are two different stories.”

Fauci and Paul did not respond to NPR’s request for comments before releasing their report. Felicia Goodrum, a virologist at Dartmouth College, remarked to NPR that Fauci might have been more reserved in private discussions with colleagues, as they rapidly worked to understand the new virus, compared to his public statements aimed at reassuring a panicked public.

This document comes before a hearing with the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Paul. Paul subpoenaed Fauci, stating he wouldn’t testify voluntarily. This committee plans to question Fauci about his knowledge while the pandemic unfolded.

Understanding Disagreements on Virus Origins

For years, debates between Paul and Fauci have focused on SARS-CoV-2 origins. Fauci asserts scientific evidence supports a virus spillover from animals to humans, citing the Wuhan wet market as a potential source. Virologist Goodrum states that initial genetic data connects early cases to the market, not the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

A February 2024 survey by the Global Catastrophic Risk Institute found most virologists agree with the animal origin theory. Contrarily, Paul pushes for consideration of the lab-engineering hypothesis. Paul previously described evidence pointing towards a lab-based origin during a Senate hearing, suggesting NIH funds might have supported research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology to enhance virus transmission, known as gain-of-function research.

Robert Garry, a virologist at Tulane University, disputes these claims, stating there’s no evidence supporting the lab-engineering theory, asserting a lack of precursor viruses nearing SARS-CoV-2 at the Wuhan lab.

Paul alleges Fauci, along with colleagues and federal agencies, shielded any lab-engineering evidence from Congress and the public. Despite NPR seeking further information from Fauci regarding Paul’s comments, they received no response before publication.

By February 1, 2020, Fauci documented a call among scientists debating the virus’s origins. Most researchers on the call believed deliberate insertion plausible, indicating potential lab engineering. Paul emphasized this, alluding to the consensus suggesting lab-leak feasibility. However, Goodrum explains the evolving scientific consensus as new data surfaced, defending science’s iterative nature requiring ongoing revision.

Future Steps

On Wednesday, Fauci and Paul will once more debate publicly during the committee hearing. Paul intends to question Fauci about his notes, probing the concerns highlighted previously. Fauci may reiterate his thought process and the collective stance of his peers during the pandemic based on evolving evidence.

Fauci previously dismissed unverified pandemic-origin claims. In his diary on August 24, 2021, he labeled related congressional inquiries a “waste of time.” Yet Paul defends his actions as “oversight,” arguing vital oversight necessitates these investigations.
