Cultural institutions have been eagerly preparing for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. A wave of exhibits and activities are bringing a festive spirit to the area surrounding the National Mall. This period from Memorial Day to July 4th is filled with events that showcase America’s history and aspirations.
The Smithsonian introduces ‘American Aspirations,’ a noteworthy exhibit. It features the mahogany desk used by Thomas Jefferson to draft the Declaration of Independence. This exhibit presents some of the most treasured objects from the Smithsonian’s collection.
In recent months, several new exhibits and activities have opened in anticipation of this milestone. Glenstone and the National Gallery of Art launched American-themed shows earlier this spring. Additionally, Mount Vernon has introduced Revolutionary War-themed activities. These will continue throughout 2026.
This summer, patriotic events peak with an array of festivities. A parade of tall ships, a downtown block party, and opportunities to view iconic American treasures highlight the celebrations. Each event offers a chance to honor the American Experiment and its enduring legacy.
