An air show at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho came to a sudden stop after a collision involving two fighter jets. The incident unfolded on Sunday when the jets collided midair, crashing to the ground.
According to Cmdr. Amelia Umayam, spokesperson for the U.S. Pacific Fleet’s Naval Air Forces, all four crew members managed to eject safely. The four are reported to be in a stable condition, confirmed by the base.
The crash took place around two miles northwest of the base during the second day of the Gunfighter Skies Air Show. The mishap occurred at 12:10 p.m. local time while an aerial demonstration was in progress. The aircraft involved were two Navy EA-18G jets from Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129 stationed at Whidbey Island, Washington.
Footage widely shared on social media captures the dramatic midair collision, showing the jets tumbling to the ground enveloped in flames and dark smoke. Observers also noted the deployment of four parachutes near the impact area.
Col. David R. Gunter, commander of the 366th Fighter Wing, responded to the event by expressing gratitude for the safety of everyone involved. He acknowledged the efforts of first responders and appreciated the patience and support of attendees.
The base went into lockdown at 12:30 p.m., allowing emergency crews to operate without interruption. Attendees were asked to stay until about 3 p.m. when they could finally leave. A video on Instagram depicted the scene, showing spectators at an aircraft hangar surrounded by planes, with black smoke visible in the distance.
Eyewitnesses recounted the moment of the collision. One individual reported hearing someone remark, ‘We are down,’ before witnessing four parachutes descending and smoke rising.
Police later announced the air show’s cancellation, advising the public to avoid the area. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
