Glenview’s July Fourth Parade Celebrates America’s 250th Amid Weather Challenges

On Saturday, Glenview’s July Fourth parade brought excitement to Harlem Avenue. Marching bands, colorful floats, and enthusiastic crowds celebrated the America 250 theme. Kids eagerly gathered candy thrown from floats, while applause greeted the marching units.

Due to its length, the term ‘semiquincentennial’ was not used on banners. Instead, signs with the number 250 highlighted the celebration of 250 years since America’s independence in 1776.

Heavy thunderstorms had threatened to cancel festivities in the Chicago suburbs. Northbrook called off its 4 p.m. parade as rain clouds approached. On July 3, Wilmette canceled its activities in Gillson Park, including live music and fireworks. Park Ridge adjusted its fireworks to start at 8:10 p.m. before rain fell, but attendance was lighter than usual.

During Glenview’s 2026 parade, children gathered around a man distributing treats while marching with the Glenview Malayalees India parade unit. Many floats and marching units gave candy or small toys to children watching from the sidelines.

In Evanston, a concert at Arrington Lagoon was canceled due to water accumulation. The parade ended early at 3:45 p.m. to ensure safety from lightning detected 10 miles away. Winnetka canceled pre-fireworks activities and closed Duke Childs Field, reopening before fireworks commenced. Skokie Park District canceled face painting and the bounce house but continued with the fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

Despite weather concerns, the rain stopped by Saturday evening, allowing many suburbs to proceed with their fireworks displays.
