A team of cave rescue experts from Thailand, who were involved in the 2018 mission to save a youth football team, have joined the efforts to rescue seven individuals trapped in a flooded cave in central Laos. The incident took place in Xaysomboun province, located about 78 miles northeast of Vientiane, the capital of Laos.
According to Laophattana News, the villagers entered the cave in search of gold on May 20. They got trapped when sudden heavy rains caused flash floods, blocking their exit. Local authorities and residents have been actively working to pump out water from the cave, yet access to the trapped individuals remains blocked.
“We still do not know whether there are any signs of life or if they are still alive,” stated Bounkham Luanglat, president of a Laotian volunteer rescue group, in a conversation with AFP.
Efforts on the ground have been complex, with about 100 people from Laos and Thailand participating in the rescue mission in Long Chanh district. Among them are two specialist rescuers from Thailand and an expert from Finland, who also aided the 2018 rescue of the “Wild Boars” team in Thailand.
The successful 2018 rescue operation saved all 12 boys and their coach after they were trapped by flash floods in the Tham Luang cave complex in northern Thailand.
To address the current situation in Laos, a letter from the Laotian rescue group, dated Saturday, appealed to Thai charities for advanced rescue resources such as water pumps, generators, and thermal imaging devices. They described the scenario as a humanitarian emergency and called for assistance from their Thai counterparts.
“The mission is tough. Because of rain, when we went down [into the cave] we had to move out as the water level was increasing,” reported Thai rescuer Chakkit Taengtan in a video on his Facebook page on Sunday.
The cave system is situated in a remote region and features multiple levels, some extending over 110 yards from the entrance, which adds to the complexity of the rescue operation.
