Jay Clayton, recently nominated by President Trump to be the director of national intelligence, has been the U.S. attorney in Manhattan for the past 14 months. He previously acted as a major figure in enforcing Wall Street regulations during Trump’s initial term.
Background Before U.S. Attorney Role
Clayton’s career includes shifting between a private law career and government roles. He was a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell, a notable New York law firm, before being appointed as U.S. attorney. As the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission in President Trump’s first term, he had a reputation for a pro-business stance. Under his leadership, the office initiated significant enforcement actions against crypto assets and pursued Elon Musk over his use of Twitter, which Musk later acquired and renamed X.
Significant Cases During Clayton’s Tenure
The Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office, renowned for its global case reach and national security involvement, has handled noteworthy cases under Clayton’s oversight.
Currently, they are prosecuting Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s former president, for a cocaine importation conspiracy and other charges after his apprehension by U.S. military forces in January. Maduro has entered a not guilty plea.
Additionally, Clayton recently announced charges against an Iran-backed militia commander. The charges allege his involvement in a plot to target Jewish sites in the U.S., including a New York City synagogue, and orchestrating attacks in Europe linked to Iran’s retaliatory actions against the U.S. and Israel for ongoing conflicts.
The office is also managing the federal case against Luigi Mangione, accused of assassinating UnitedHealthcare’s CEO in 2024. Clayton has recused himself from this case, which is now under his deputy’s supervision.
