Kansas City Chiefs Coach’s Son Arrested for Shooting Incident

The son of Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Eric Bieniemy has been detained and charged in Virginia for allegedly shooting his mother, Mia Bieniemy, according to local authorities.

On Monday, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to a shooting incident late Sunday in Ashburn, Virginia. They found 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to a hospital and was listed in stable condition as of Monday.

Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy, has been arrested in connection with the shooting. Authorities have charged him with malicious wounding, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm in a dwelling. He remains held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.

Eric Bieniemy, who serves as the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs, was at a team practice in St. Joseph, Missouri, earlier on Sunday. He did not attend the practice session on Monday. Expressing support, head coach Andy Reid stated, “Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family. He’s got a great support group here as a family as needed.”

Eric Bieniemy took his position as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator after Matt Nagy joined the New York Giants. From 2018 to 2022, Bieniemy was the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, a period during which the team led the NFL, averaging 30.1 points per game, according to CBS Sports Research. In 2025, he worked with the Chicago Bears as their running backs coach, and prior to that, he held roles with UCLA Bruins and the Washington Commanders.
