Significant Races to Watch
Reporters from NPR provided insights into the critical races this primary season.
Maine’s U.S. Senate Race
Democrats see an opportunity to gain control of the U.S. Senate, requiring a win against five-term Republican Senator Susan Collins in Maine. Political newcomer Graham Platner, the likely Democratic nominee, presents a strong challenge. Platner’s campaign focuses on changing a political system he claims is unfair to working-class citizens. Despite recent allegations concerning past behavior, which Platner denies, the race remains vital for both parties.
Maine’s 2nd Congressional District
With Rep. Jared Golden retiring, a competitive primary has emerged in a district that supported Trump in the past. Four Democrats are campaigning to take on former Republican Governor Paul LePage in the upcoming election. This race provides insight into which candidates might succeed in challenging districts.
Maine Governor Race
As Democratic Governor Janet Mills steps down due to term limits, the focus shifts to who could succeed her. Analysts anticipate a Democrat continuing in the role. The field includes several Democratic and Republican candidates, potentially leading to ranked-choice runoffs. Critical election issues are housing, taxes, healthcare, and Trump’s influence. Polls indicate Dr. Nirav Shah leads in the Democratic contest, whereas Bobby Charles is prominent among Republicans. The independent contender, State Sen. Rick Bennett, will also be on the November ballot.
Nevada Governor’s Race
In Nevada, incumbent Republican Governor Joe Lombardo faces significant challenges. Trump’s economic strategies, unpopular in the state, complicate Lombardo’s re-election efforts. While he holds a strong position for the primary, the general election remains uncertain. Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford poses a formidable threat, though he faces criticism for extensive travel and backing data centers. Ford’s main Democratic competition comes from Alexis Hill, adding intraparty tension.
South Carolina Governor’s Race
The race for governor in South Carolina illustrates the influence of Trump’s endorsements. Republican Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, supported by Trump, competes with Trump ally and Attorney General Alan Wilson. Congresswoman Nancy Mace joins them, claiming endorsement was lost due to her stance on transparency in Epstein-related documents. A runoff is likely. Democrats have three main contenders: State Rep. Jermaine Johnson, lawyer Mullins McLeod, and businessman Billy Webster. Trump’s influence here is closely monitored following a loss in Iowa.
