A search is ongoing after a Pennsylvania State University student was fatally shot in Philadelphia in what may have been an armed robbery. Billy Schmidt, aged 22, lost his life at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Saturday while just blocks away from his residence.
The Philadelphia Police Department reported that officers discovered Schmidt on the street with a gunshot wound to his chest. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, he was pronounced dead at 1:47 a.m.
Billy Schmidt’s father, Bill Schmidt, shared with ABC7 that his son had been returning from a bar where he enjoyed watching the NBA Finals with friends.
“He was a really good person who cared about everybody and never hurt or bothered a soul,” said Bill Schmidt. “I’m shocked when they stole his phone that he chased them.”
Security footage provided to the police depicted Schmidt pleading for the return of his phone before multiple shots rang out. The video showed a man discarding a cellphone, followed by someone else running around a corner, pursued by Schmidt until he was shot. Billy Schmidt was a senior at Penn State, on track to graduate in December.
No arrests have been made by the police regarding Schmidt’s death. Neighbors have joined in calling for any witnesses to step forward.
“I want justice, I want the kid that shot Billy to be found,” a neighbor stated. “If anyone’s out there that recognizes anything… they seem young to me. If anyone has any information or recognizes anything about the kids, I would love for them to come forward.”
Billy’s sister, Anna Schmidt, noted on a GoFundMe page that he was a cherished brother and friend whose loss has deeply impacted the community. The family has gathered over $48,000 in donations since his death.
