Memorial Hike Honors Indiana Dunes Advocate Ron Seman

The Friday night event was one that Ron Seman would have cherished, marked by a clear blue sky over the Indiana Dunes. Twenty-five people gathered to walk Seman’s beloved trails 9 and 10 at Indiana Dunes State Park, leading to a ridge with views of Lake Michigan. This hike honored Seman, who died at 64 on June 26, leaving behind his family and an extensive network of friends from his many outings.

A memorial hike included Seman’s widow, Susan, who typically could not participate due to health issues. Following the hike, participants joined at the beach for a circle meeting during sunset, sharing memories. Seman had hosted regular Friday hikes from the Nature Center, sharing his vast knowledge of dunes, flora, and fauna, with occasional humorous embellishments he called “10% stories.”

Tiffany Yorek, a trail regular, remarked on Seman’s ability to create lasting relationships and community bonds. “Every time we hike together, there is still that bond,” she stated. Ryan Pagell, who led the memorial hike, expressed that Seman’s spirit continues to accompany each walk.

Barry Tharp, who met Seman eight years ago, remembered his vibrant personality and excitement. Seman guided numerous hikes and built lasting connections with participants. Known for his Christian faith and scientific expertise, he aimed to boost monarch butterfly populations and held the “Monster Dune Challenge,” hiking 22 miles of trails, even in winter.

Ed Oziminski recalled his last hike with Seman during a hot June day when hikers sought relief in Lake Michigan. Marcella Bernat shared how Seman helped her heal from losing her husband. Seman’s encouragement led her outdoors daily, providing vital emotional recovery.

Connor Zelasko worked on a petition for a dune to be named after Seman, hoping for recognition. Zelasko organized hikes for individuals dealing with addiction, empowering recovery through nature and connection.

Seman’s death impacted many, creating a sense of loss among friends like Zelasko, who viewed Seman as an influential figure in their lives.
