NASCAR Celebrates U.S. Navy’s 250th with a Historic Race

NASCAR’s Historic Event at Naval Base Coronado

NASCAR is set to host its first-ever race on a military installation this weekend. The event will take place at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego on a new road course. This race coincides with the celebration of the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary.

Tribute to George H.W. Bush

For this occasion, the Haas Factory Team has introduced a special car livery. This design, created in collaboration with Texas A&M University, honors George H.W. Bush, former Naval aviator and 41st president of the United States.

The livery will adorn Cole Custer’s No. 41 Chevrolet Camaro for Sunday’s Anduril 250: Race the Base. The number 41 itself is a nod to Bush’s presidency.

Joe Custer, Haas Factory Team President, expressed pride in this tribute: “President Bush lived one of the greatest American lives. We’re all better off today because of what he did for our country. For our team to race the No. 41 in tribute to him, and now celebrate all he stood for, is a rare honor.”

Historical Context

George H.W. Bush enlisted in the Navy on his 18th birthday, becoming one of the youngest Naval aviators during World War II. He served in the Pacific, surviving being shot down in 1944.

Bush’s grandson, Sam Bush LeBlond, shared that Bush cherished the honor of having a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier named after him, stating, “It represented values that guided him throughout his life: service, duty, and love of country.”

He believes Bush would have been deeply touched by this tribute at Naval Base Coronado, recognizing its role in sharing American values with new generations.

The race promises to be a special event as NASCAR marks a new chapter in its history while honoring the legacy of President Bush.
