The Vegas Golden Knights have faced criticism after their loss in the Stanley Cup Final, marking the franchise’s third appearance in the final since its debut in 2017. The team’s rapid success has attracted detractors among NHL fans.
Star forward Jack Eichel had an insightful response to the criticism when informed that his team was named the most-hated in the league. In May, Rotowire conducted a poll across all 50 states to identify the most-hated NHL team. The Golden Knights topped the list in 11 states, more than any other team.
Reasons for this sentiment include their impressive achievements with one Stanley Cup win, three Finals appearances, and only one missed playoff. Yet, their cutthroat approach also plays a role. They’re known for making firm decisions on trading players and changing coaches, including the release of Bruce Cassidy just before the playoffs.
Eichel, traded from Buffalo in 2021, offered a different perspective. He emphasized that within the league, Las Vegas is not on players’ ‘no-trade’ lists. Players want to join and represent the team, appreciating the organization’s prestige and camaraderie.
Eichel’s point is backed by the team’s ability to attract free agents. Although it’s speculative whether Eichel referred to Dylan Larkin, the Red Wings captain has expressed a willingness to join the Golden Knights through a trade.
