New Beginnings for Pale Male’s Legacy

2 weeks ago 0

Good morning. Today, let’s discuss the happenings at a Fifth Avenue address known for its celebrated resident, Pale Male, the red-tailed hawk. We also have updates on the Long Island Rail Road strike resolution.

From the 1990s until his passing in 2023, Pale Male gained fame for residing on Fifth Avenue. Now, his last mate, Octavia, has returned to their nest with a new partner. There is even news of a chick.

According to Stella Hamilton, a bird enthusiast and longtime observer of Octavia since 2014, “So much drama.” She has seen Octavia through various encounters with other hawks even during Pale Male’s time. After his death, Octavia became selective in choosing a mate. Hamilton noted, “Every year she would have a boyfriend, but it wouldn’t last. She was unsatisfied with their nest-building skills or other reasons.”

The new mate is yet unnamed, but the pair has been seen performing typical parental tasks, such as hunting for food. Occasionally, observers catch a glimpse of their chick, a small ball of white fluff.

In 2013, Octavia had offspring with Pale Male. Bird watcher D. Bruce Yolton, who fondly recalls the ‘wonderful experience with Pale Male,’ admitted he thought Octavia was no longer able to have chicks. The sight of a new chick has delighted many in the birding community.
