Nithya Raman, a graduate of Harvard and MIT, has made a significant impact in Los Angeles politics. Rising quickly, she secured a spot in the mayoral runoff against Karen Bass, highlighting her sixth year on the City Council. During her tenure, Raman introduced the Tenant Anti-Harassment Ordinance in 2021 and pushed for changes to the Rent Stabilization Ordinance, reducing rent increase limits.
Despite her achievements, Raman has experienced conflicts with fellow council members. She attended nearly 100 community meetings, gaining recognition for engaging directly with voters, contrasting with Spencer Pratt’s high-profile social media efforts.
“[Pratt] made a lot of noise and did a lot of television and got a lot of social media amplification, while she was out actually campaigning, meeting with voters, canvassing,” said Mike Bonin, a progressive former city councilmember.
Currently, Raman holds 27.1% of the votes, slightly ahead of Pratt’s 26.7%. She remains in second place in the Los Angeles mayoral race, edging out Pratt as more ballots are counted. The deadline for vote counting continues, with thousands of ballots outstanding.
Raman’s campaign is focusing on addressing issues such as encampments near schools and police staffing levels. Meanwhile, former President Trump, without evidence, has accused Democrats of election fraud in California, casting doubt on the integrity of the election process. These unfounded claims echo Trump’s pattern of questioning election results unfavorable to him.
