Helix is a single-seat electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, known as an eVTOL. Unlike helicopters that require rotors, Helix features fixed wings and rises vertically, entirely powered by electricity. It falls under the FAA’s Part 103 ultralight category, easing regulations, such as not requiring a pilot’s license for operation. Weighing approximately 355 pounds when empty, Helix can fly below 200 feet in unrestricted airspace, cruising at about 62 mph with a flight duration of roughly 30 minutes per charge. Full charging takes approximately 75 minutes using a 240-volt outlet.

The base price of Helix sits at $190,000. Additional options include a transport trailer for $21,000 and a charger for $1,100. To secure a reservation, interested customers need to pay a $50,000 deposit. According to Ken Karklin, delivery could occur within nine to twelve months for those who reserve today. Although Pivotal doesn’t disclose exact sales figures, they have reported a robust interest with a considerable backlog of orders.

Training to Fly the Helix

Training sessions are conducted at Pivotal’s headquarters in Palo Alto and at Monterey Bay Academy Airport. The program involves passing the FAA knowledge test, completing ground schooling, and mastering aircraft control, maintenance, transportation, and assembly. Most participants finish training within two weeks, and to date, over 50 individuals have been trained, including both customers and employees.

Safety Features of the Helix

Designed for simplicity, Helix boasts only 18 moving parts, ensuring reliability and minimizing system failures. The aircraft undergoes independent evaluations by the Light Aircraft Manufacturers Association, with Pivotal’s quality control certified by SAE International. In terms of noise, Helix emits a sound similar to leaf blowers during takeoff and landing, but it becomes near silent once in the air. Pivotal’s extensive flight data from over 9,000 flights, including 2,500 piloted flights, confirms the aircraft’s commendable safety record.

Who is Flying Pivotal’s Aircraft?

A few early adopters, such as Tim Lum from Washington, have already experienced flying Pivotal’s aircraft. Lum, who purchased a BlackFly in 2023, has accumulated approximately 1,200 flights across over 100 locations nationwide. As a non-FAA-certified pilot, he operates from private land with permission and often shares his aircraft with family and friends.

Public Perception and Future Plans

Despite advancements, flying cars still elicit skepticism. Concerns about airspace congestion and public reaction remain prevalent. Pivotal distinguishes itself from air taxi companies by focusing on single-user recreation, short travel, and specialized missions, emphasizing ground-level community engagement through events and testing.
