Positive Developments for Coral Reefs Amid Global Warming

1 hour ago 0

As rising ocean temperatures wreak havoc on coral reefs globally, some scientists have discovered potential reasons for optimism. They are utilizing artificial intelligence to locate areas where conditions favor coral survival, thanks to cool currents, less sunlight exposure, and protection from cyclones.

This study was unveiled at the Our Ocean Conference in Mombasa, Kenya, and is undergoing peer review for the journal Environmental Research Letters. Researchers pinpointed 42 factors that create conditions ideal for these coral havens, known as refugia. They ran these through a program analyzing nearly 38,000 human observations of coral cover and composition over 65 years. The results identified over 5,800 square miles of climate-resilient ocean in 72 countries.

This assessment has found three times more refugia than the 2018 50 Reefs Study, which was the first to systematically determine potential coral preservation areas worldwide. Scientists believe this new study offers a more detailed understanding of the current state of coral reefs and can improve conservation strategies.

David Obura, former chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), emphasized the importance of the study. He highlighted its focus on whether climate refuges will cover 10 percent, 1 percent, or even less of the historically known coral reefs.

Coral reefs are vital ecosystems, supporting about a quarter of ocean species throughout their life. They provide fish critical for millions of people’s protein intake and shield coastlines from storm impacts.
